Kids Count is a not-for-profit organization that has been offering services to the Milford Community since 1992. A volunteer board of directors is comprised of parents and representatives of early childhood education, business, medical and mental health and preschools. Kids Count’s mission is to develop, enhance, and promote the educational, social and emotional well being of children from birth to age five so they enter kindergarten ready to learn. Recognizing the crucial importance of a successful start, Kids Count makes information and programs accessible to Milford families to ensure this mission.
John Peterson Memorial Preschool Scholarship Fund
Kids Count provides preschool scholarships to Milford families to help to underwrite the cost of preschool. Scholarship applications are available on Kids Count’s website (www.kidscountofmilford.org), or by calling 203-783-3627.
Preschool Showcase
Kids Count provides an annual Preschool Showcase at the Milford Public Library. Held each fall, parents have the opportunity to meet representatives of Milford Preschools who present materials that include each preschool’s philosophy, schedules, and fees.
Preschool Directors’ Meeting
Kids Count staff meet with the Preschool Directors annually to discuss current trends and determine ongoing workshop topics.
Professional Development Workshops
Kids Count offers professional development workshops to staff of the Milford Preschools on an ongoing basis. Most workshops are offered in the evening at Milford Hospital. Lists of current workshops are available in the monthly newsletter, on the Kids Count website, or by calling 203-783-3627.
Ongoing Support to Preschools and Parents
Kids Count engages professional staff to support the Milford preschools in a wide array of onsite support. Kids Count staff is available to support and encourage parents about the importance of preschool and how to choose a preschool.
Family Read, Inc. - A Family Literacy Program
Kids Count offers the Family Read, Inc. family literacy program. This program is offered at least twice annually in the evening in the fall and spring. The series runs for 8 to 10 weeks. Dinner and child care is provided. The program combines the teaching of literacy skills with child development and family empowerment issues. Parents and children learn to use the power of language to discover more about themselves, their families, and their communities.
