Milford Kids Count is a community collaborative. Its Board of
Directors represents diverse elements of the Milford community
including educators, business people, social service agencies,
service organizations, consumers, taxpayers, and government
officials.
Mission: The Mission of Kids Count is to
develop, enhance, and promote the educational, social, emotional and
physical well-being of children from birth to age five so that they
enter kindergarten ready to learn. Recognizing the crucial
importance of a successful start, Kids Count makes information and
programs accessible to Milford families to ensure this mission.
John Peterson Memorial
Preschool Scholarship Fund: Through the John Peterson
Memorial Preschool Scholarship Program and a grant from the United
Way of Milford, Kids Count provides scholarships to families to
permit preschool children to attend quality preschool programs. Kids
Count also facilitates local training for Milford providers of
preschool programs. Over the past four years, $49,485 has been
dedicated to preschool scholarships.
Preschool Showcases: Kids
Count hosted two very successful preschool showcases at the
Milford Public Library. Eighteen preschools participated by
attending the showcase with materials describing the philosophy,
enrollment criteria and fees of their preschools. Parents were
able to visit with directors and staff of the preschools to help
them determine which preschool they would choose to send their
child. In addition, Kids Count staff and board disbursed
information to parents regarding the importance of preschool, how to
choose a preschool, and how to prepare a child for preschool.
Harborlight Happening: For
the past five years, Kids Count has hosted the Harborlight Happening
as its major yearly fundraiser. It has been an opportunity for
the board to invite the community as a whole to assist us
financially to reach our goals. The event consists of either a
brunch, cocktail party, or dinner, accompanied by a silent and live
auction.
At Harborlight Happening, a
journal is distributed which focuses on issues important to Kids
Count and the community. This year the focus will be on issues
related to child and family safety. Thousands of these
journals have been distributed through Milford.
William Caspar Graustein
Memorial Discovery Grant: Kids Count board and staff
participated in writing and supporting the application for funding
for the Discovery Grant which will focus on identification of
children in family child care homes and centers who have social and
emotional needs and provide support to providers and families in
dealing with these needs.
United Way of Milford:
The United Way of Milford is a supporter of the programs of Kids
Count. This year an additional program will focus on the
outreach to families who live in the Meadowside School district and
the provision of the evening playgroups as well as support to Family
Child Care Providers in their homes. |
